Julia K. Diebol, Ph.D., CSP, C.P.S.M.

Dr. Diebol is a Managing Consultant in our Human Factors and Product Safety Group and plays a leading role in our Chemical Hazard Communication practice. She is also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Michigan teaching product and occupational safety management. Her professional practice and academic training include environmental health sciences, public health, product and occupational safety, and human factors/ergonomics.

Dr. Diebol regularly evaluates warnings and other risk communications in industrial, consumer, and community settings, including safety management practices that span the last century.  She researches and analyzes current and historical standards and regulations for product and occupational safety, chemical hazard communication, and risk communication, including regulations by OSHA, the CPSC, FDA, EPA, DOT, USDA, and other government agencies, and standards by ANSI, ISO, ACGIH, and UL, among other organizations. She also lectures on a variety of hazard communication topics, including OSHA’s adoption of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), and directs a professional development course for the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication regarding human factors for chemical hazard communication in consumer and industrial settings.

In 2013, Dr. Diebol completed a large-scale study of community satisfaction with environmental risk information in the context of industrial contamination.  She has experience using a variety of methods to assess perceptions of risk and satisfaction with technical communications, including population surveys, structured interviews, and focus groups.

She holds the following degrees from the University of Michigan:

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences
  • B.S.E. in Industrial and Operations Engineering

Dr. Diebol is currently Vice President of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC), and is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). She is both a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and a Certified Product Safety Manager (C.P.S.M.).
